Eco-friendly cleaning tip.

Clean your jewellery without the use of any harsh chemicals.

Tarnish is the oxidation on metal and occurs over time when exposed to oxygen. Silver jewellery is very sensitive to this and it is very important that you look after your silver jewellery to keep it looking beautiful for longer. There is a great way that I have shared below to keep your jewellery clean and looking shiny.

Forget about using any cleaning products or harsh chemicals. This method is easy, quick and will brighten your jewellery whether it has a high polish, or a matt finish and will make jewellery fresh and looking new again.

Aluminium foil and bicarb

All you need:

  • Aluminium foil

  • 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

  • Ceramic or glass dish

  • boiling water

Method:

Line the dish with the aluminium foil, shiny side up. Place your silver jewellery carefully ontop of the foil (the silver must be touching the foil in order to create the reaction for cleaning to work). Sprinkle the Bicarb into the dish and then pour in the boiling water. Making sure the jewellery is well submerged in the water.

Let it all fiz and bubble away. You should begin to see results within a couple of minuets. However, if your jewellery has lots of tarnish on it, this may take longer to clean.

Once you are happy your jewellery is clean, you can remove from the dish and rinse well under clean water. If you feel that further cleaning is needed, you can use a soft toothbrush (soft bamboo toothbrushes work really well) and some mild soap (free from ammonia) and then gently brush away any dirt.

This is a guide for cleaning silver jewellery. If your jewellery has gemstones or sea glass/stones set in them make sure you always check before what the best way is to clean your specific gemstones. Some gemstones are sensitive to being submerged in water and the bicarb reaction with the foil may damage softer gemstones.

I hope this is helpful, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in contact via the contact form. I will be more than happy to answer any of your queries.

Warm Soapy Water and a soft toothbrush

All you need

  • A bowl of warm soapy water.

  • a soft bristle toothbrush.

Method

Fill your bowl with warm soapy water (a mild dishwashing liquid works great). Use your soft toothbrush and gently brush over your jewellery. This is a great way to get rid of dirt in those tighter and tougher areas. Once you are happy with your now clean jeweller, simply dry it off and either wear it or make sure to store in a safe and dry place.

This method works really well after you have used the aluminium foil and bicard techniques. It will allow you to get into areas that haven’t quite been lifted by the reaction between the foil and bicard. Using these techniques together will allow you to get the best results.

I hope that this has been helpful for you, and you are able to enjoy your jewellery once again with it looking fresh and shiny. Please if you have any further questions or would like to get in touch about a design, head to the contact page and either fill out the form or book a free consultation call.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and I hope to see you here again soon.
